Book Launch! My Very Little Sister and the Very Big Story.

Yesterday we had the great pleasure of attending the book launch for ‘My Very Little Sister and the Very Big Story, a children’s book written by Alina, when she was 4 years old, to help families of premature and sick babies. Alina has written the book from her perspective to reassure siblings and families going through similar experiences that they are not alone after her baby sister, Anela, was born 15 weeks prematurely in June 2019.

The book has had a huge impact with nearly 4000 copies brought by charities, businesses and neonatal networks. It’s even travelled to the USA, featuring in a library in California! 600 copies have also been supplied via The EBA to support local families.  Alina’s incredible parents, Amy and Alex, also generously funded 2 copies for the majority of the 156 neonatal units in England, so that families can have free access to the book whilst they are there to support them.  Amy’s hope is that the book will help families and make it a little bit easier when a baby has to be in hospital.

Within just a year since its launch, the book has had an amazing impact already and we think all of the Brett family are incredible for doing such a positive thing to help other families.

Ronald McDonald House Brighton very kindly hosted the book launch event in their garden and some EBA members and their children attended to present a cheque for all the funds raised so far. An amazing £1044 has been raised for the EBA from book sales to individuals and neonatal units, along with 200 copies that were purchased by Vcreate, and a £100 donation from a family friend of the Brett’s.

The event was a lovely reunion of some of the families that stayed in Ronald McDonald house at the same time as the Brett’s, with the babies Anela, Sienna and Ellis, who are all around the age of 2, toddling around happily. It was also an opportunity to catch up with some of the Neonatal Unit staff, including TMBU Sister Hannah Fraser James, who assisted in the development of the book.  It was also brilliant to see some of the Ronald McDonald House staff including Jazz and Martin who worked so hard to get the garden ready for the launch, and Madge, the RMH Housekeeper.  Julie Carroll, Chaplain and Psychotherapist on TMBU also popped along to support us.

We were also pleased to welcome Danielle Evans, who was crowned Miss Brighton in February this year. Danielle is keen to support The EBA as she was born prematurely at 26 weeks. She kindly let Alina try on her Miss Brighton crown and sash, and all of us at The EBA are thrilled to have her support.

Thank you to everyone that supported and attended the launch event, and everyone who has purchased the book to help our fundraising. Most of all a huge thank you to the Brett family, and especially Alina, the little girl who made all this possible.
