Spreading Christmas Cheer!

On 25th November we launched our ‘Spreading Christmas Cheer’ campaign to support families facing the festive season in hospital with babies born prematurely or sick. Designed to lift their spirits and provide comfort at a time when most of us are at home celebrating with loved ones, We are calling for people to support the campaign which will see stockings and presents delivered to neonatal baby units in Sussex this Christmas. Bringing a sprinkle of seasonal magic, we will provide over 150 stockings and presents to the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Special Care Baby Unit at the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. The gifts will be distributed amongst families on both units at Christmas time, ensuring babies, mums, dads, brothers and sisters all have reason to celebrate with their new arrivals, wherever they are on Christmas Day.

Claire Hunt, Neonatal Matron at the Trevor Mann Baby Unit said: “Having a baby born too soon is a surreal and testing experience for anyone at any time, but this can be even more difficult at special celebrations such as Christmas and particularly in a year such as this. Even a small act of kindness can really lift the spirits across the units, and give families a little bit of joy in what is otherwise an obscure environment for Christmas.”

Tommy Etherington, who spent Christmas 2019 at TMBU with his baby daughter Nora, born at 23 weeks, said, “Our little Nora was born on 3rd December and was still very ill when Christmas came. When we arrived on Christmas Day morning and found a stocking underneath Nora’s incubator, we couldn’t have been more grateful for the care that was shown not only to Nora, but also to us as her parents. It did a lot for our emotional wellbeing as it is not how we had envisioned spending our first Christmas with our precious little Nora. It is a memory that will live in our hearts forever.”

Heidi Crawford, Co-Chair of The Early Birth Association and former parent on TMBU said, “Christmas will be different for all of us this year, but spending your baby’s first Christmas on a neonatal unit whilst they fight to recover and without family to lean on is a daunting prospect. We hope that by spreading a little Christmas cheer, it will provide a festive escape to families facing Christmas Day caring for poorly babies, and would be grateful for any support in making this happen.”

Supporters of the campaign include The Entertainer which has donated toys, as well as Happy Planet Gifts which has created festive decorations. If you would like to support the campaign to help babies and their families this Christmas, please donate to the Spreading Christmas Cheer campaign.
